Richard's dad recently retired and his last day of work was while we were there! Since Andrew lives in Maryland, we were there, and Diane was also in town, Emmy decided to fly in Mary as a surprise. Of course we were trying to figure out how to surprise him all week. He kept saying he was going to go in the office on Friday morning to clean out his desk, etc, but then on Friday morning he decided he was going to just do it on Monday! Well, we needed a way to get him out of the house so that Mary and Joseph could sneak in (Lizzie stayed at home with Nate). Richard considered sabotaging the internet or trying to get him to go to Best Buy to shop, but in the end we had Richard, Richard Sr, and Miles go out to lunch together on a 'daddy date.' Emmy went to the grocery store to get the balloons and cake, and as soon as the boys left I started decorating. Diane had already left to get Mary from the airport, saying she was going to see a friend. Then I called the boys while they were at lunch to have them pick up Andrew from the metro on their way home (this was all planned out even though we pretended it wasn't). I loved the look of surprise on Richard's face when he came home. He has worked sooooooo hard over the years and always ended up working on vacations, etc. We had a yummy dinner, cake, toasts, and presents for him. It was so nice to celebrate him.
