One afternoon in March, Miles came up to Richard, pulled down his pants, and asked him to take off his diaper so he could go pee pee on the potty. Well, we figured Miles was ready for potty training!
I already had underwear ready and washed and a little seat to go on top of the toilet. He had gone several times in the potty, so he knew what to do. That afternoon and the next day he had several accidents (including poop) in his underwear when I didn't remind him often enough to go. I figured he just didn't know how to recognize when he had to go, since I didn't think he was doing it on purpose.
The second day we watched a Daniel Tiger episode which talks about how when you need to go to the potty you need to stop what you are doing and go right away. Well on the third day when he was eating his lunch he recognized for the first time on his own that he needed to go. We quickly got him to the bathroom. He was so proud! That afternoon he realized he needed to go poop. We tried putting him on the toilet but he was nervous. A little later I told him that he could have a certain toy he had been wanting if he went poopy on the toilet. Well that was all he needed. He went right in and did it and then we headed to Walmart!
I was so relieved at how easy it was to potty train Miles! I had really dreaded all of the accidents, but he did great. I think it helped that he was ready for it. It has been so nice to not have to buy diapers or to have to change them. He loves to do it all on his own (except wiping his butt, when I hear, "Mommy wipe my butt!!!!" Hahaha. He still wears nighttime diapers. He will also still have accidents occasionally if we are playing outside and I haven't reminded him in a long time, but he will usually recognize when he needs to go. I love it when I just hear the flush of the toilet.
Phew! I do feel like I kinda deserved a break after the disaster it was to switch from a crib to a big boy bed. I'm so excited that he has no pacifier, sleeps in a big boy bed, and is potty trained. Please tell me there are no more transitions for awhile :)
