Nauvoo Road Trip

Richard is currently on his spring break, so we decided to go on a road trip to Nauvoo. It is only 8 hours away, and I had never been there. Nauvoo is a beautiful city along the Mississippi River where the Mormon pioneers lived for a few years until they were forced to leave in 1846. Many of the early homes, shops, and public buildings have been restored or rebuilt for public tours. Think Williamsburg...except everything is free!

First we went to the Nauvoo Temple. We accidentally arrived at 6:30am instead of 7:30am for the 8:00am session, because we didn't realize we were in a different time zone! So that clock in the hotel was right after all...

At noon we went on a wagon ride. It was freezing cold, so luckily they had lots of blankets for us to use. It was a great overview of the city. The elderly woman giving the tour kept getting ahead, because the pages of the script were sticking together. For example, she would say, "To your left is a grove of trees"...and when we looked there would be an open field with no trees. A little confusing but very funny.

Trail of Hope- where they left Nauvoo and crossed the Mississippi

We visited the Printing Office and the Post Office.

Joseph Smith's grave. He is buried here along with his brother Hyrum and his wife Emma. We also visited Carthage Jail where Joseph and Hyrum were murdered, but we didn't take any pictures.
